On April 24, 2024, Neil Young performed ‘Cortez the Killer’ with Crazy Horse at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre in San Diego. Before this live recording, Young released ‘World Record’ in November 2022, an album that explores current themes and issues through his signature sound. ‘World Record’ stands out not only for its poignant lyrics but also for being produced with Rick Rubin, which added a fresh intensity to Young's already rich discography. This performance centered around ‘Cortez the Killer,’ a track from his 1975 album 'Zuma,' which addresses colonialism and history with a haunting narrative. Interestingly, this live performance even included a previously missing verse, showcasing Young's desire to connect with his audience while interpreting his classic work in a new light.
