In 1989, Sting was riding high on the success of his debut solo album, 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles,' which had already made waves since its release in 1985. By the time of the live recording at China Club, he was in a unique position, blending rock and jazz influences while collaborating with legendary artists like BB King and Bruce Hornsby. This performance of 'Why I Sing the Blues' highlights Sting's versatile artistry, showcasing his ability to merge genres effortlessly. Interestingly, after this recording, Sting went on to release '...Nothing Like the Sun' in 1987, which further solidified his status as a prominent solo artist. At this stage in his career, he was not just a former frontman of The Police; he was establishing his foothold as a significant force in the music industry, and this live collaboration truly reflects that evolution.
