In 1979, KISS was riding high on the success of their album "Dynasty," which dropped just before the live recording of "New York Groove" in Largo, MD, on May 24th. This album marked a pivotal point for the band, as it showcased a slightly softer rock sound, incorporating elements of disco that reflected the era's vibe. Interestingly, "New York Groove" was a cover, originally by Arrows, but KISS’s rendition became synonymous with their brand, energizing crowds with its infectious beat. During this tour in '79, KISS was not just famous for their music but also for their over-the-top stage performances, complete with iconic costumes and jaw-dropping pyrotechnics. The Dynasty Tour was crucial for the band, as it introduced new members and set the stage for their later classic albums.
