In September 2002, Modest Mouse was riding high on the wave of success from their album 'The Moon & Antarctica,' which had been released just a year earlier. This album marked a significant shift in their sound, showcasing a more atmospheric and complex approach compared to their earlier work. By the time of the Bumbershoot performance, fans were drawn to the exciting blend of introspective lyrics and eclectic instrumentation that had become their signature. 'Never Ending Math Equation,' a standout track from 'The Lonesome Crowded West' (1997), resonated even more with audiences in a live setting, filled with the band’s raw energy. Interestingly, the early 2000s became a pivotal moment for Modest Mouse, leading to their later mainstream breakthrough with 'Good News for People Who Love Bad News' in 2004.
