In August 2007, when Vampire Weekend performed “M79” live at the East River Amphitheater, they were riding high on the success of their self-titled debut album, which had dropped just a few months prior, in January of the same year. The album, renowned for its eclectic mix of indie rock infused with intricate, rhythmic melodies and African-inspired beats, had already begun to establish the band as a fresh voice in the indie music scene. Interestingly, this live recording occurred during a period of keen anticipation and burgeoning fame for the group, as they were quickly gaining traction with tracks like “Oxford Comma” and “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.” The live set is particularly noteworthy because it captures the infectious energy of the band's early performances, showcasing their unique sound that would soon garner them widespread acclaim and a devoted fan base. It’s a slice of history—before they would go on to achieve even greater heights.
