The Flaming Lips

In May 1996, when The Flaming Lips took the stage at The Abyss in Houston, they were riding high on the success of their acclaimed album *The Soft Bulletin*. Released in 1999, *The Soft Bulletin* crystallized their transition from a scrappy alternative rock band into a more experimental and orchestral outfit, showcasing lush soundscapes and introspective lyrics. However, prior to this era, the band had released *Clouds Taste Metallic* (1995), which hinted at the creative evolution that would soon blossom. This Houston gig was pivotal – it was part of a mini Texas tour that allowed them to further cultivate their eccentric and theatrical live performances.
