In August 2007, Wilco was riding a wave of creativity and acclaim, having recently released their album 'Sky Blue Sky' in May of that year. This album marked a pivotal moment for the band, showcasing a more laid-back and accessible sound compared to their previous work. During the concert at Marymoor Park, where the live recording of 'California Stars' took place, the atmosphere was electric, amplified by the special guest star Bill Frisell. His presence added a unique layer to this performance, melding Wilco's rootsy vibe with that signature jazz-flavored guitar. It's interesting to note that 'California Stars' is a heartfelt tribute to Woody Guthrie, reflecting Wilco's ongoing connection to American folk traditions. At this stage, the band was refining their distinctive sound while expanding on their narrative-driven lyricism, which resonated with audiences across the country.
