In August 1996, Metallica was riding high on the momentum generated by their self-titled album, commonly known as "The Black Album." Released in 1991, this pivotal record catapulted them into the mainstream, featuring iconic hits like “Enter Sandman” and “The Unforgiven.” At the time of their performance at Lollapalooza, Metallica had already established themselves as one of the biggest names in heavy metal, and their reputation for electric live shows was solidified by their previous tours. Interestingly, the band was known for their intense performances, and this Lollapalooza gig was no different, showcasing tracks from the "Load" sessions which would be released the following year. To add a little flair, “Until It Sleeps,” one of the standout tracks from "Load," was performed in this setlist, highlighting the band’s evolution in sound.
