At the time of the live recording of “Money for Nothing” at Knebworth on June 30, 1990, Dire Straits was riding high on the success of their album “Brothers in Arms.” Released in May 1985, this groundbreaking record not only catapulted them into superstardom but also marked a significant shift in the music landscape, thanks to its innovative use of digital recording techniques. By 1990, the band had established themselves as rock icons, blending rock with elements of new wave and, notably, making extensive use of the iconic guitar riff that fans would immediately recognize. Interestingly, the Knebworth concert was part of a charity effort for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy, showcasing the band's willingness to use their platform for a noble cause. Reflecting on this era, it’s clear that Dire Straits had a unique ability to create powerful anthems that not only entertained but also resonated deeply with their audience. And can you believe it?
