In May 2017, when Soundgarden took the stage at the Fox Theatre in Detroit for their live performance of "Black Hole Sun," the band was riding a wave of nostalgia and renewed appreciation, largely due to their influential role in the '90s grunge scene. Just prior to this show, the band had released "King Animal" in 2012, marking their first studio album in over 15 years. This return to form rejuvenated both the band and its fanbase, as they delved back into the sound that defined a generation. The Detroit concert was especially poignant, given that it showcased their iconic hit "Black Hole Sun," a track that’s intertwined with both personal and cultural history. The haunting nature of the song resonated deeply, highlighted by the band's rich history in Seattle's music landscape. Tragically, this performance would be one of their last, as lead vocalist Chris Cornell passed away just a year later, making this moment a bittersweet echo of their legacy.
