The Shins Perform 'Australia' Live on Letterman

Venue: Letterman Location: United States Date: 2012

In January 2012, The Shins performed "Australia" on *The Late Show with David Letterman*, coinciding with the release of their album *Port of Morrow*, which came out in March of the same year. This performance marked a significant moment in The Shins' career, as it was their first appearance after the departure of founding member and guitarist Jesse Sandoval, who had left the band before the recording. *Port of Morrow* saw lead vocalist James Mercer taking a more central role in the songwriting and production, working alongside retired producer Greg Kurstin. The album was anticipated following a five-year hiatus since their previous release, *Wincing the Night Away*. The Letterman performance not only showcased the band’s evolution but also introduced their refreshed sound to a broader audience, setting the stage for their continued growth and experimentation in the indie rock genre.
