In March 2014, Elbow was promoting their fifth studio album, "The Take Off and Landing of Everything," which was released shortly after the performance on March 10, 2014. The band's sound, characterized by emotive melodies and intricate arrangements, received acclaim, further establishing their reputation in the British rock scene. Notably, "My Sad Captains," the song featured in the BBC Radio 2 In Concert performance, reflects themes of nostalgia and introspection, which are prevalent in much of their work. By this point in their career, Elbow had already garnered several awards, including a Mercury Prize for their earlier album "Build a Rocket Boys!"
