The Smashing Pumpkins

In January 1996, during the live recording "The Smashing Pumpkins - Live in Düsseldorf," the band was riding high on the success of their critically acclaimed double album, *Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness*, which had been released just a few months prior in October 1995. This period marked a peak in their popularity, characterized by a blend of alternative rock and the burgeoning mainstream appeal of grunge-influenced music. The concert features several standout tracks from *Mellon Collie*, including "Tonight, Tonight" and "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," both of which showcase the band’s dynamic range. Notably, "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" would go on to win a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1997. The live performance captured the intense energy and ambition of The Smashing Pumpkins during this creative high point, as they solidified their place in 1990s rock history with an elaborate stage presence and poetic lyricism.
