Rush Performs Xanadu Live at Montreal Forum Concert Film

Venue: Forum de Montréal Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada Date: March 27, 1981

Rush was riding a wave of creative success when they released their iconic live recording “Xanadu” from their performance at the Montreal Forum on March 27, 1981. This concert was part of the tour for their album *Permanent Waves* (1980), which marked a pivotal shift in their sound towards a more accessible and radio-friendly approach while still retaining their progressive rock roots. The prior album, *Hemispheres* (1978), was ambitious with its elaborate compositions, including the epic "Cygnus X-1 Book II," but it was *Permanent Waves* that really broadened their appeal. Interestingly, “Xanadu” itself is a prime example of Rush's lyrical depth, inspired by the poem "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, blending philosophy with fantasy. Their vibrant live performances, characterized by those unforgettable, soaring melodies and complex rhythms, really showcased their artistry and deep connection with the fans during this era.
