Janis Joplin

In May 1969, during the live broadcast of "Summertime" in Stockholm, Janis Joplin was at a pivotal moment in her career. She had just released her second album, "Cheap Thrills," with Big Brother and the Holding Company, which had come out in August 1968. This album propelled her into stardom, showcasing her powerful voice and unique style, and it featured the iconic hit "Piece of My Heart." By the time of the live recording, Joplin was recognized as a leading figure in the counterculture movement and a prominent voice in rock music. The performance captures her raw energy and bluesy interpretations, marking her growing influence as a solo artist. Interestingly, this performance occurred shortly before Joplin's switch to a solo career, as she would soon leave Big Brother to explore new musical directions, paving the way for albums like "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" later in 1969.
